The Book of Opinions
Designer's note

Core idea: the whole site is one numbered gamebook in a 1-bit stack. Short lists are read one item per page, counting down, and every chapter ends in choices that send you to another list: "to be delayed, badly, turn to page 41". You never see an index unless you ask for the contents page.

Length: lists of ten or fewer get a page per item, so a top 3 is three page turns and a punchline. Longer lists become shelves of ten per page, so the 100 books are ten shelves you can browse or skip down. Every page has a real number: type one in, or press left and right to riffle.

Homes for rich content: every item page has a full-width plate for a photo or illustration with a caption; links are footnotes; detours mid-list are the cross-links between lists; drop caps, tailpieces and the lobby map are spots for art. Try turning to a page that does not exist.

Hardest to build: the writing. Every detour ("if Dallas reminds you of airports...") is hand-authored connective tissue, and stable page numbers have to survive lists being added and reordered.
