Top Whatever

Five ways to wander through Alex's top-X lists, from the designer who thinks websites should look like they were made with scissors and a stolen copy card. Black ink only. Each frame opens a working mock.

I'd fight for this one

01 Paste-Up

Every list is a gig poster wheatpasted over the last one. You peel the top sheet to get to the next, or rip a tear-off tab to jump sideways, and rank is set like a festival bill: the headliner screams, number 100 whispers.

02 Ransom Note

The headline is the navigation. The list title is glued from cut-out words, and each word is a dial: swap one to flip the mood, another to go longer, another to change the subject.

03 The Long Receipt

Press a key on the register and a list prints out of the slot, pushing what you already read down the roll. A top 3 is a ticket stub, the 100 books is the receipt that reaches the floor, and every one ends in coupons for the next.

04 Redacted

The answers are blacked out and the blurbs are clues. You count down each list by burning the ink off one bar at a time, and the whole site keeps score of how much of it you have declassified.

05 One Sheet

The site is a single sheet of copier paper imposed as an eight-page mini-zine, upside-down panels and all. Tap a page and the paper spins and pushes in; flip the sheet and the back is a poster of the 100 books.
